Chegg wanted to promote their organizational culture and vision, so they asked Mile80 for help with making an interview video about it. And, since I was part of the Mile80 editor roster, the project ended up on my lap.
Interview videos are nothing new in the corporate marketing scene, and they do have a bit of a bad rep for not being very engaging. So how do you keep an audience interested in them? Well, the first and most important thing to work on is the script.
You need to make sure that what is said on-screen really is of interest to your target audience, and this can be done through editing as well. Reshuffling sentences for clarity, showing the right facial expressions for emphasis, mixing and matching different people and the things they say can give a whole new look, feel and message to the same old interviews. And you can build on top of that even further by using B-roll, motion graphics, sound design, music, and so on.
That is pretty much what I did for this video, and the folks over at Chegg were very happy with the result. Even a random commenter on their YouTube liked the video.
